SOLVANG DANISH DAYS

Non-Profit Solvang Danish Days Foundation Announces Changes to the 2020 Solvang Danish Days Event Weekend, Scheduled for September 18-20

-- Danish Days Planners and Organizers Working to Create New COVID-Safe Weekend Line-up for 2020's 84th Annual Event; More Traditional Danish Days Attractions will Return for 2021 Danish Heritage Festival --

June 24, 2020 - Solvang, CA - The non-profit Solvang Danish Days Foundation, planners and organizers of each year's Solvang Danish Days festival (www.SolvangDanishDays.org), have officially announced changes to the 2020 event line-up due to COVID-19 concerns. The 84th Annual Solvang Danish Days weekend, scheduled for Friday through Sunday, September 18-20, 2020, will not take place as it has in the past, however Danish Days organizers will be offering different event options to continue to celebrate the annual tradition, which honors the 1911 establishment of Solvang by Danish-Americans. More details about the 2020 version of Solvang Danish Days weekend - which will be a hybrid event, with virtual portions as well as intimate, in-person experiences - will be released in the coming weeks.

More traditional Solvang Danish Days weekend events which will NOT occur this year, are: Saturday's and Sunday's Aebleskiver Breakfasts; the weekend's Aebleskiver Eating Contests; the three Parades (Friday Torchlight Parade, Saturday Danish Days Parade, Sunday Children's Parade); the Viking Beer & Wine Garden; the Viking Encampment and Kid's Korner in Solvang Park; the Old World Artisans Marketplace; any of the concerts or dance performances in the Midgaard Pavilion or in Solvang Park; and all of the roving musicians and dance troupes throughout town.

In place of these beloved event highlights, Danish Days organizers are rallying Solvang merchants to create a safer line-up of exclusive events such as baking classes and demos; limited-seating, Danish-inspired dinner parties (with appropriate social distancing measures); and virtual counterparts to some of these experiences for those who wish to enjoy the annual Danish heritage festival from their own homes.

The Solvang Danish Days website (www.SolvangDanishDays.org) will be updated with 2020 event information soon, as will the event's dedicated Facebook, Instagram and Twitter: facebook.com/SolvangDanishDays@DanishDays and twitter.com/DanishDays. The Solvang Danish Days Foundation looks forward to continuing with the 2021 edition of the annual Danish Days event, September 17-19, 2021.

About the Solvang Danish Days Foundation

In early 1995, the Solvang City Council approached Santa Ynez Valley residents from long-established, local Danish families and other interested groups, about possibly setting up a non-profit foundation - Solvang Danish Days Foundation - to formally plan and organize the increasingly popular, annual Danish Days festivities. The original Solvang Danish Days Foundation board members were Ken Andersen, Brenda Anderson, Hans Birkholm, Max Hanberg, Howard Petersen, David Rasmussen and Henry Skytt. The Foundation members meet throughout the year to ready each year's celebration. Donations and volunteers for the event are always welcome; please contact the Foundation for more information.

In 1936, the first Solvang Danish Days festival emerged in honor of the village’s 25th anniversary. Ever since, Danish Days celebrates Solvang’s heritage with authentic food, music, dancing, parades, live entertainment and family activities. In 1946, a reporter from The Saturday Evening Post (an influential magazine of the day) visited during Danish Days and the article that appeared in January 1947 put Solvang on the national map. It stated, in part, “Solvang…a spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose in California’s charming Santa Ynez Valley. Old country charm and customs have been successfully fused with the American way of life. Nowadays…the quaint village is busy living up to its affectionate name, ‘Little Denmark’.”
